Population of Kerala

The population of Kerala comprises predominantly of Malayali Dravidian ethnicity, the rest being Indo-Aryan, Jewish and Arab both in blood and culture. Tribal Adivasis also form part of the State. Malayalam is the language spoken by many and is the official language of the State.

Kerala is one of the densely populated states of India with the density of population to 819 persons per sq.km. Census in Kerala is taken in intervals of 10 years, along with the rest of the country. Census is taken by Directorate of Census Operations, Kerala. The first census in Kerala was in the year 1961. The figures given here are as per census conducted in the year 2001. Total Population in the state is 31,841,374 with 26% urban population and the rest rural population. Rural Population comes to 23,574,449 and Urban Population 8,266,925.
